Dog Fights

Dog fight wounds are a common presentation to any emergency animal hospital. Dog bites can be very damaging to the tissues under the skin and in extreme cases, penetrate the abdomen and chest cavities.

What to do if your dog is in a fight:
  • Never try to break up the fight by trying to manually restrain your pet with your hands. When dogs are aggressive or trying to protect themselves they can bite indiscriminately leading to severe bite wounds to humans.
  • Once the dogs are separate take your pet immediately away from the situation.
  • Assess your pet for any areas of broken skin. Small bite wounds can shield massive damage to underlying structures.
  • If your pet has a penetrating bite wound or significant bite wounds over the chest or abdomen, immediately veterinary attention should be sought. Check with your local vet first however if they are closed we are here to help.
